2022

"Perception (Red + Teal)" was created for my BFA Graduation exhibition in 2022. It is a culmination of the material exploration/experimentation and the light and space artists/work that inspired me over the last four years.
I wanted to make a massive final sculpture that is a nod to these two incredible pieces and put my professional abilities on trial. I drew compositional influence from Ellsworth Kelly's Austin, specifically the square and rectangular bars of glass that are arranged in circles and squares.
I loved the idea of making a square that manufactured its own light rather than acting like a window by being a shape that allows light to pass through it.
IN ITS ENTIRETY, "Perception (Red + Teal)" IS a 4' x 4' x 7" square box that hangs on the wall. It has three horizontal rectangles of colored acrylic sheets with light coming through them. The color scheme of the piece is the same red and teal featured in Irwin's Miracle Mile, plus a mirrored acrylic sheet in the middle to challenge the viewers' perception of themselves and the piece at the same time (as a gesture to James Turrell.)
The box is a steel cage with steel sheets covering all sides and four french cleats in the back for as much wall support as possible. The backing is recessed plywood to spread light evenly throughout the piece. the front is a door that opens like a cabinet to access the lights easily inside, and to get the massive front door open, the left side of the box detaches and can reattach with magnets. The acrylic sheets can be changed anytime by sliding them in and out of the attached steel mounts.
