Augmented Rain (AR) - Installation view
Augmented Rain (ar)
Augmented Rain (AR) defines my emotional precipitation and growth through symbolism, light, and color.
This piece is the largest of my body of work, measuring 6 feet wide and 3 ½ feet long, made of wood and lit translucent acrylic tubes that hang on the wall above eye level.
Symbolism is what drives this piece. I think weather and clouds directly correlate to our emotions and behavior. When I imagine dark, looming rainclouds, the feelings translated are sadness, grief, and change. In contrast, white, fluffy clouds communicate feelings of positivity and lightness. In addition, rain symbolizes change, growth, and clarity, while rainbows convey transitions, new beginnings, and hope. I am in search of all these things when navigating loss and heartbreak.
When I made this work, I dealt with feelings of loss and brokenness and wanted to avoid that pain during the day when I had work to do and needed to focus. I projected those feelings into something physical/tangible and did not realize what I had created until I had already completed AR. When the project started, I was mainly concerned with aesthetics and how the light interacted with the materials. I knew exactly what I wanted it to look like from the beginning and through 3D renderings but did not see the symbolism and what it looked like until someone brought it to my attention. Then everything set in, and the emotions hit me again.
